Preliminary reports from Russian news agencies indicate there are no survivors among the 49 people believed to have been on board.
The plane went missing while on approach to Tynda Airport. Emergency services later located the wreckage, confirming a devastating loss of life. While details are still emerging, this incident marks a profound tragedy for all those affected. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
A rescue helicopter swiftly pinpointed the crash site, revealing the burning fuselage of the aircraft on a mountainside, about 15 kilometers from Tynda. Local media quickly shared images, showing thick plumes of smoke billowing from the dense taiga forest where the plane had come down.
Regional Governor Vasily Orlov confirmed the initial reports that there were 43 passengers, including five children, were on board, alongside six crew members in the plane that crashed.
Preliminary investigations are pointing towards “crew error during landing in poor visibility” as a likely cause for the plane crash, according to reports from Russian news agencies. It is understood that the aircraft may have been attempting a second landing after an initial unsuccessful approach to the Tynda airport.
The Antonov An-24 is a Soviet-era aircraft, a model still widely used in Russia, especially for regional flights through areas with difficult infrastructure and harsh weather. This heartbreaking incident highlights the inherent risks of flying in such vast and often unforgiving landscapes.
A full investigation into the plane crash is expected to commence once the flight data and cockpit voice recorders are recovered. The names of the deceased have not yet been released. This developing story continues to unfold as authorities work to understand the full circumstances of this devastating loss.
